Armed forces from France, Norway, and the UK have been monitoring the Donegal coast and west coast of Ireland on the hunt for Russian subs, it has been revealed.
The NATO operation has been taking place over the last week, the Sunday Times reports.
A Boeing Poseidon P-8 aircraft was reportedly dispatched by Britain and Norway to an area off Sligo and Donegal, while a French Bréguet 1150 Atlantic plane flew off the Clare coast.
The Poseidon contains advanced, state-of-the-art, Anti-Submarine Warfare and Anti-Surface Warfare sensors enabling long-range maritime patrol capability by the RAF in securing the seas around the UK and abroad.
The allies are concerned about the lack of defending power Ireland has amid potential Russian interference with subsea cables and gas pipelines, such as the Corrib gas pipeline. EU states have been recently warned of the threat of sabotage across the continent.
