Letterkenny councillor Gerry McMonagle says that urgent investment must be delivered to improve services at Letterkenny University Hospital.
The hospital is near crisis-point due to a lack of funding and staffing vacancies, the Sinn Féin candidate said.
Echoing the concerns of patients and medical professionals, Cllr McMonagle is making LUH an election priority and demanding that it is upgraded to a Model 4 hospital.
“Letterkenny is the sixth busiest hospital in the state. Unfortunately it’s the 12th in line for funding and this has a massive impact on services and staff,” Cllr McMonagle said.
“For far too long patients in Donegal have been having to travel to Galway and Dublin for cancer services,” he added.
“Letterkenny University Hospital must be raised to a tier four hospital. The funding received is not adequate for the services that people in Donegal deserve.”
Cllr McMonagle, a member of the Regional Health Forum West, is calling for the upgrading of Letterkenny University Hospital to a model 4 hospital with the necessary financial investment every year, as well as properly resourced supports for children with disabilities and their families.
