Councillor Jack Murray has welcomed further progress on plans for a new state-of-the-art leisure centre in Buncrana.
It’s almost 10 years since Buncrana had a public swimming pool, but the council is set to lodge a new funding application for the leisure centre in the call for the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund.
“As planning permission is already secure, this is another step towards (finally) having the top class centre that our community deserves,” Cllr Murray said.
“We still have the option of seeking funding for the centre within the Shore Front development project as I’d secured agreement for that at full council, but this latest development could have our centre constructed even earlier.
“Thanks again to the council staff who continue to drive forward the project, to all those in the committee who have done so much to help get it to this point, and particularly to all the people in the local community who refuse to let this issue go and make sure it’s always high on the agenda!”
The new swimming pool building plans contain a five-lane 25-metre-long swimming pool, a learner pool, flume slide and spectator area. There will also be a first floor fitness suite and fitness studio. Site development works include soft and hard landscaping facing Aileach Road including a bus drop off area along Aileach Road with a path up to Scoil Mhuire.
