The Rescue 118 helicopter crew from the Irish Coast Guard sprang into action this morning after receiving a distress call from a cruise ship located north-west of Tory Island.
The emergency involved a person on board the cruise ship Renaissance, which is currently on an 11-day trip around Ireland and the UK, having departed Le Havre, France. The ship was travelling from Belfast to Killybegs when the medical situation arose in the early hours of this Tuesday morning.
Rescue 118 airlifted the casualty by stretcher and transported them directly to Sligo University Hospital due to the adverse weather.
It was a busy 24 hours for the Coast Guard yesterday. The Rescue 118 was tasked yesterday afternoon at 3.16pm by Malin Head Coast Guard to a missing person search in Portsalon, assisted by Lough Swilly RNLI, Mulroy Coast Guard, Donegal Mountain Rescue Team. Shortly after 9pm, the Lough Swilly RNLI volunteer crew sadly located the missing woman’s body in the water.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with this lady’s family and friends at this sad time,” an RNLI spokesperson said.
Rescue 118 were also tasked to a search in Bangor Co.Mayo which was a false alarm with good intent.
