Plans to revitalise the Old Courthouse in Letterkenny have been allocated €199,969 under THRIVE, the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme today.
Donegal County Council secured the funding to further develop plans and designs to turn the Old Courthouse into a tourism destination.
The council will aim to secure further capital funding in 2025.
This will be an opportunity for citizens and the community to further engage with the Local Authority and contribute towards the design process for the reuse of the Courthouse as a tourism-led project with potential to incorporate a number of themes from culture, community, the environment, climate and learning.
Funding has been awarded under two European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Regional Programmes, with a total of €5m allocated for 26 towns across Ireland.
The regeneration strategy for Letterkenny town centre involves the Linear Park scheme, a re-imagined Market Square, a Cathedral Quarter Park and the Revival of the Old Courthouse.
Welcoming the funding, Donegal minister, Charlier McConalogue, said: “This funding will facilitate the development and enhancement of integrated urban strategies using a Town Centre First Approach and will assist the local authority to identify suitable projects and ensure they are ready to commence capital works.
“The Town Centre First Initiative is helping to revitalise our communities all over the county and I’m delighted that Letterkenny is one of the 26 towns included in the first tranche of funding that was announced this morning,” the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine added.
