Donegal County Council and the Friends of Murvagh Beach joined forces last Friday to unveil a brand new beach wheelchair, bringing a wave of accessibility to the popular beach.
Local man Terry McGroarty had the honour of officially launching the initiative by cutting the ribbon and showcasing the all-terrain chair in action.
This innovative beach buggy is set to be life-changing for people with disabilities, granting them unprecedented access to experience the beauty of Murvagh Beach and its surrounding waters.
Information on booking appointments for the chair will be released in the coming weeks.
The launch was a significant addition to Donegal’s growing fleet of beach wheelchairs, bringing the total count to 16.
The wheels on the buggy can be changed to a thinner set of wheels suitable for nearby forest walks.
Donegal County Council now provides beach wheelchairs at each of the 12 Blue Flag Beach locations in the county setting a new standard of inclusivity in the county.
The ‘Friends of Murvagh Beach’ committee expressed their appreciation in receiving this equipment, emphasising the great impact it will have on individuals with disabilities. They believe it will grant families the freedom to enjoy the beach and water in ways they never thought possible.
A spokesperson said: A very special thanks to Michelle Travers, a dedicated member of the Friends of Murvagh Beach (FOMB) committee, for working diligently with the various agencies to get our first ever chair for Murvagh beach.”
