Popular Gaobh Dobhair radio presenter Áine Ní Churráin has been honoured with a life membership award from the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Áine, well-known for the Barrscéalta magazine programme, retired from RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta in 2020 after an incredible four decades on the airwaves.
At an NUJ ceremony themed “In Good Company” yesterday, Áine was among several distinguished journalists honoured for more than 40 years’ service, including former NUJ president Barry McCall and current Assistant General Secretary Séamus Dooley.
“I am humbled and touched by this recognition from my peers,” Áine said on receiving her certificate. “I’ve been a NUJ member since the beginning of my career as a broadcaster and have valued the support that it provided me.
“I would sincerely advise all young journalists to avail of membership as it provides backup when needed. Again, I’m honoured.”
In her retirement, Áine enjoys the beauty of Gweedore’s beaches and remains involved with Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair, serving as both a trustee and a committee member.
During the NUJ reception yesterday, Séamus Dooley paid tribute to the first Irish Secretary Jim Eadie at the first presentation evening since his death.
A framed portrait of Jim was unveiled and will be presented to Mrs Bridie Eadie, who was unable to attend.
