A motorist who was caught recording the scene of a crash while driving has been handed down a fine and penalty points.
Gardaí were attending the scene of a collision in the Letterkenny area on Thursday when they observed a driver recording the collision scene on their mobile phone as they passed by.
The driver, who was a novice with ‘N’ plates, was stopped and a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice was issued. (A fine of €120 & 3 penalty points).
A garda spokesperson said: “Learner and novice drivers have a lower penalty points threshold compared to fully licenced drivers. L and N drivers who get 7 penalty points in a 3-year period will be banned from driving for 6 months.
“Always drive safely and follow the rules of the road. Never use/hold a mobile phone while driving. Please do not ever record or photograph the scene of road traffic collisions as you pass by. To do so is disrespectful to those involved and may cause extra distress.”
