Donegal County Councillor, Gerry Crawford, has indicated that he will contest the local elections in June after reconsidering his decision to retire from politics.
The Porthall-based public representative had announced a few weeks ago that he would not be a candidate in the Stranorlar Municipal District.
Cllr Crawford has been an elected member of Donegal County Council since 1999.
Speaking about his change of heart, Cllr Crawford said he still has unfinished work to complete locally.
He said “On reflection, I have decided to allow my name to go before the people once again. When I announced recently that I was stepping down, I suppose I wasn’t fully happy with that decision. After talking to my family, supporters and the Fianna Fáil party, I have decided to seek election to Donegal County Council for what will be a sixth term.”
“I enjoy representing the people of my area. Since I was first elected 25 years ago, I have done my best to help as many people, groups, organisations and causes as I could. I am proud of my record over the last quarter of a century, and I am keen to see the projects that I have been working hard on over the last number of years being delivered.”
He revealed that one of the main priorities for him has been to secure a new hospital and primary care centre for Lifford.
He added “It’s proposed to build these new facilities and services at Lifford Common. This is part of the HSE’s capital plan, and things are looking extremely positive for this major project,” Cllr Crawford commented.
“On the same site in Lifford, I have proposed that 60 houses be constructed there. Housing is a big issue in Lifford and these new builds are much needed. The new wastewater treatment plant in Lifford, which I also campaigned for, has been of great benefit. I’m delighted that the St. Jude’s Court and Hazlewood areas are being connected to the system, and that the new sewerage works at Coolatee are also nearing completion,” he added.
“The 29 new houses currently under construction at Gallows Lane in Lifford and due to be finished by the summer and these will give the town of Lifford a massive boost. I also welcome the positive news that there are 30 houses planned for St. Johnston, and the progress being made in relation to the unfinished estate at Meadow Hill in Raphoe,” Cllr Crawford said.
“I have enjoyed working with my council colleagues at local level and in the council chambers in Lifford. I am happy with my decision to contest the local elections in June. I’m looking forward to canvassing over the next five weeks when I’ll get a chance to talk to, listen to the voters, and take on board their issues and concerns,” Cllr Crawford said.
