Two hugely popular Letterkenny-based teachers have closed their schoolbooks for the final time after a combined 57 years of service.
Between them John McClean and Bernard Doherty have seen some major changes down through the years at Errigal College and indeed other schools.
Both have watched as hundreds (if not thousands!) of pupils passed through their science and wood technology departments at the school at Windyhall.
And with those years of service came many stories of various kinds.
Many of these stories were recounted when colleagues, former colleagues, friends and family gathered at the Radisson Blu in Letterkenny recently to say farewell to the pair.
Bernard, known for his years of teaching Woodwork, Graphics, and PLCs, officially retired on January 7, 2024, culminating 34 years of exemplary service. The majority of his tenure was spent at Errigal College having joined Donegal ETB in 1994. Doherty’s contributions extended beyond the classroom, actively engaging in initiatives such as the Student Council, First Aid programmes, TUI involvement, and promoting outdoor pursuits for students. As he embarks on retirement, he eagerly anticipates quality time with his wife, Frances, and their children Catherine and Cathal, with plans for memorable skiing trips ahead.
John will be renowned for his teaching of Science, Chemistry, and PLCs, and marked his official retirement on August 24, 2023, after 23 years at Errigal College, commencing his journey with the school in 1998. Mr. McClean’s impact resonated throughout the school, notably through his leadership as Head of the Science department, his involvement in the State Examinations, and his integral role in celebrating the achievements of Leaving Cert students annually. As he enters this new chapter, John looks forward to exploring Europe and beyond with his wife, Caroline, and their children Jessica, Roben, and David, in their beloved campervan.
Also in attendance at the retirement function was Donegal ETB Chief Executive, Ms. Anne McHugh, and Board of Management Representative, Ms. Joanne Donaghey.
