It was ‘mission accomplished’ for the intrepid teams who took on the Summit 2 Sea for MND challenge last weekend.
For the Moville man who inspired it all, it was an emotional and triumphant feat beyond the wildest dreams.
Adrian Harkin, a keen kayaker and swimmer originally from Derry who ran Inish Adventures, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in August of 2022. As the disease quickly robbed him of his love of watersports, he turned his attention to raising funds and awareness of MND.
But a plan formed in his mind, and thankfully Adrian’s friends are as daring as he is to turn that vision into a reality.
On Saturday, volunteers completed a 3,172 kilometres relay circumnavigation of Irelands’ coastline, coupled with hikes to the highest points in each of the country’s 32 counties.
The climax arrived in Moville, where Adrian was back on the water for a momentous homecoming cheered on by family and friends.
This groundbreaking feat resonated across Ireland, with online donations surpassing €70,000 and counting.
Reflecting on the day, Adrian and the Summit 2 Sea team shared a heartfelt statement to everyone who took part.
“Your dedication, enthusiasm, and unwavering support have truly made this event a success beyond measure,” they said.
“Whether you donated, paddled, or walked, volunteered, shared our posts, or simply cheered us on from afar, your contributions have made a difference in the fight against Motor Neurone Disease.
“Your support has helped Adrian and the team raise awareness for MND.
“As we reflect on the incredible moments shared during the Summit 2 Sea for MND, let us carry forward the spirit of camaraderie, compassion, and resilience. Together, we are making waves of change and leaving a lasting legacy in the fight against MND.
“Thanks is not enough. Everyone who touched the Summit 2 Sea for MND campaign has made Adrian’s 4 little words “I’ve got a plan” a reality we will be forever grateful.
“With deepest appreciation, Adrian and the Summit 2 Sea for MND Organisation Team.”
