More than 240,000 cigarettes, 52 kgs of tobacco and a vehicle were seized as part of a major bust in Donegal yesterday.
Revenue officers carried out the intelligence-led operation following a vehicle search in an undisclosed location in Donegal.
The illicit cigarettes, branded ‘Sobranie’, and roll-your-own tobacco, branded ‘Golden Virginia’, have a combined estimated value of over €244,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €191,000.
The seizure was made with the assistance of the local detective unit from An Garda Síochána.
“Two men have been questioned and investigations are ongoing,” a Revenue spokesperson said.
“This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply of illegal tobacco products. If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on 1800 295 295.”
