Watch: Lucky escape for driver and pedestrians in Letterkenny crash

There have been calls for a speed limit reduction after the latest crash on a busy Letterkenny road.

Yesterday evening, a driver lost control of their car in Magherennan, went over a crash barrier and was prevented from descending a 50 foot embankment after it got wedged in a tree. Witnesses said there were a number of pedestrians in the vicinity at the time.

One local resident, who did not wish to be named, has called for the speed limit in the area to be brought back to 80km per hour.

“Fortunately for all, the car spun off the road to the left away from the footpath and went over the barrier,” they said.

There was only the driver in the car and he managed to climb out of the car and leap onto the embankment. There were several pedestrians on the path opposite as the car lost control with nowhere to go due to the same steep drop on the other side of the road also.”

They added that there have been a number of accidents on that stretch in the last year.

“The speed limit was moved from 80km to 100km a couple of years ago and since then there have been several bad accidents and fatalities on that road.  Something needs to be done.”
