Councillor Patrick McGowan has been selected to contest his sixth consecutive election in the Lifford Stranorlar electoral area under the Fianna Fáil banner.
His selection was made last night in the Villa Rose Hotel in Ballybofey.
Minister Charlie McConalogue TD, Senator Niall Blaney, Councillor Gerry Crawford, and Pat The Cope Gallagher accompanied outgoing Councillor McGowan in addressing the packed room.
A spokesperson said the mood was hugely upbeat in anticipation for the campaign.
Senator Blaney suggested the crowd cancel any holidays and make sure they’ve comfortable walking shoes for the upcoming canvasses.
Tributes were paid to retiring Councillor Gerry Crawford who has decided not to contest this election having first been elected alongside Councillor Patrick McGowan in 1999.
It is expected the Fianna Fáil Headquarters will announce a second candidate for the electoral area in the coming days.
