Concerns about limited car parking in Rathmullan during the pier upgrade have been eased.
As major works get underway, residents and business owners raised concerns about parking availability at the beach and pier.
Initial plans indicated that the contractor would require a significant portion of the car park. However, following positive consultations between Donegal County Council and Cunningham Contractors, a solution has been found. The contractor will require less space for their compound than originally anticipated, minimising disruption to car park usage and community events.
The news comes as a relief to business owners and community members, particularly those involved in tourism and festivals.
Cllr John O’Donnell raised the matter with the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District this week, saying that the public welcomed the pier works but did not want the project to scupper the Regatta festival in August.
“A lot of businesses completely depend on that short window of tourism season,” Cllr O’Donnell said.
Cllr Pauric McGarvey acknowledged Donegal County Council’s marine department for working with the people in Rathmullan to ensure groups are accommodated, including the sailing club and funfair operator for the Regatta.
Cllr McGarvey added that he hoped that for years got come the pier works would be a major asset to the town.

Cllr McGarvey said: “I would like to thank Donegal County Council, Cunningham Contractors, the people of the town and local businesses for their contribution to the works and hope that this will keep the project positive and all will see the benefit it will be for Rathmullan in the future!
“Fr. Martin has given permission to use the carpark at St.Joseph’s Church, Rathmullan and The RDRC will also provide limited parking at the pitch on good days and busy weekends!”
The Rathmullan pier refurbishment works, which are expected to run until November, will involve essential safety upgrades including the repair of the concrete uprights, replacement of beams and decks and new ducting.
