An urgent call has been made for park wardens in Letterkenny after a toilet block was almost set alight in Ballymacool Town Park.
The incident was reported last weekend when a passerby discovered toilet paper was set on fire inside the public toilet block. The fire was extinguished before it could spread further.
Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly said the incident of anti-social behaviour shows that something must be done urgently to ramp up security in Letterkenny’s parks.
He repeated the call for park wardens to regularly patrol the main parks of the town.
“We are coming into the summer months, and we have fantastic parks but we have to put a stop to anti-social behaviour before it can get out of hand,” Cllr Kelly said.
Cllr Kelly raised his concerns at this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD, where it was agreed the matter will be put on the agenda for the next Town Forum meeting, which includes Gardaí and representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, Tidy Towns and residents’ groups.
A spokesperson for the council said that a private security firm monitors the Letterkenny parks out of hours and that cameras cover many areas of the parks. Issues of criminal damage are reported to gardaí.
