A remote Donegal island is to be inhabited for the first time in 300 years as part of an ambitious plan aimed at remote working for older people.
Umfin Island sits approximately 3 kms off the Donegal coast near Gola Island.
It currently has no electricity, running water or habitable dwellings.
However, a new project will see up to 250 settlers begin new lives on the island in less than two years time.
The aim of the plan, which is being backed by technology giant Google, is to show how people of any age can adapt and work from any part of the planet.
The Donegal island was chosen because of its remoteness – but there is a catch for those thinking of beginning a new life on Umfin.
Those applying to join the ‘Island for Life’ programme have to be more than 50 years old on January 1st, 2024 and have to be computer literate.
Their work will involve engaging with other people over the age of 50 who have never used computer technology.
Planning permission for communal living pods as well as a main technology centre is to be lodged with Donegal County Council in the coming months.
Work has already started on a slipway on the north side of the island as access is currently only by kayak.
A small bar on the island will be erected and sponsored by popular Donegal beer producer Kinnegar.
Travel around the island will be by electric scooter.
The average salary for those chosen to take part in the project is in the region of €80,000 per annum.
Although only 3kms from the mainland, those who successfully qualify for the programme will be encouraged to become self-sufficient and will be encouraged to build vegetable plots and graze animals.
The plan is being funded primarily by a wealthy American entrepreneur with strong Donegal connections as part of an overall plan at eventual complete self sufficiency.
AP Frule is credited with developing the soft pads at the bottom of Apple Macs.
Mr Frule, whose grandfather hails from Gaoth Dobhair, hopes to buy other Donegal islands if his initial project is successful.
He told Donegal Daily “I don’t see any reason why it won’t work. For far too long older people have been ignored by the world of technology.
“Now we want to give older people a chance to develop a unique world for themselves, their own Eutopia off the coast of Donegal. Why should they have to work in Dublin or New York when they can do this on Umfin with the best internet connection?
“It would be foolish not to try this and help develop this. If we can dream it, then we can build it.”
Mr Frule said he hopes the first settlers will be able to move to the island on April 1st, 2025.
