Sinn Féin’s Brian Carr has officially been co-opted onto Donegal County Council.
The motion was proposed at the latest meeting of the council.
The Glenties native will replace the outgoing Councillor, Marie Therese Gallagher.
Back in February, Marie Therese Gallagher announced that she would not be seeking re-election to the council having served on the council since 2007.
Brian Carr was also selected to contest the upcoming Local Election in June for Sinn Féin at a convention on February 27th.
The new Councillor was given a warm welcome to the Chamber by fellow councillors and senior council staff.
Speaking today, Deputy Pearse Doherty said “I’m delighted that Brian is now officially a Councillor representing his local area in west Donegal. He will be a strong republican voice on the council and a committed representative for his local area.
“He also brings a wealth of experience with him having been involved in community work as well as grassroots activism for the party for many years.
“He has been doing the work of a councillor for a very long time now and I have no doubts that he will make a fantastic councillor. He lives and breathes community work
“I would also like to take this opportunity to again thank outgoing councillor Marie Therese Gallagher and thank her for all she has done for her local area and the party in Donegal.”
Councillor Carr added “I firstly want to thank my friend, Marie Therese Gallagher, for handing me the reins and giving me this opportunity. Marie Therese has set the standard for what a County Councillor in this area should be and I plan to continue where she left off.
“I can’t wait to get the sleeves rolled up and get to work for the people of this area.
“It is such a great honour to be representing my local area on the council.”
