It was very much a historical day in Drumman NS, Ramelton, last week.
Joe Gatins, President of the Donegal Historical Society, came to present the delighted 5th and 6th class pupils with ‘The John McCreadie Memorial Shield’ as overall winners of their schools competition.
The children were asked to create a project around an old photograph; this turned into an interesting adventure for the boys and girls in Drumman and indeed the wider Drumman community. The children, along with their teacher Maura Martin, engaged in a wonderful learning experience exploring ‘The First Lucks Penny at Milford Mart’. This was done with the help of parents, uncles, aunts, neighbours, current staff, past staff and, of course, pride of place goes to the help received from the Drumman grandparents.
It turned out that Drumman had, and has, a lot of connections to the mart and these connections are now recorded in this wonderful project.
“We had grandparents on the committee which started the mart,” a spokesperson for the school said.
“We had grandparents that attended the fairs in Milford and then subsequently the mart, grandparents who worked in the mart and plenty of grandparents that both bought and sold animals in the mart.”
The children worked tirelessly on the project, creating interview sheets and carrying out the interviews with family members which gave some interesting insights into the memories of Milford Mart throughout the years.
It was also very interesting that the children managed to even locate photos taken before and after their project photo. Well done to everyone involved in this project.
Joe Gatins noted that he himself remembered the day Milford Mart opened and he enjoyed reading the links the children had with the farming institution through family members.
The children and their teacher would like to thank everyone that gave their time and assistance to them so willingly to complete this project.
