Donegal County Council has been asked to install extra speed reduction measures on the Kiltoy/Loughnagin road in Letterkenny.
The road, which passes by local businesses and residential areas, is often taken as an alternative to the Ramelton Road during peak periods.
There is one ramp on this stretch of road, but fears over speeding have prompted local representatives to seek another ramp to slow traffic near the Golf Course Road junction .
Councillors Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly and Jimmy Kavanagh raised the issue with the Letterkenny-Milford MD this week.
“The safety concerns are massive,” said Cllr Kelly. “I met with residents and the speed on this section is second to none, there have been numerous accidents at the junction at the Golf Course road.”
The road is included in the 2024 Restoration Improvement Programme. Cllr Kelly said it would make all the sense to put a ramp in place during the works.
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh said that he was also approached by residents with serious concerns about the amount of speeding, the lack of good signage and the amount of traffic on the road. He added that people are particularly worried about children’s safety.
Cllr Kavanagh also suggested that a double white line could be added to stop overtaking.
A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said that speed reduction measures will be considered as part of the restoration project, and that a ramp would seem an appropriate solution, pending a full examination of the road.
