Donegal County Council has been asked to consider adding spotlights to illuminate an iconic Celtic Cross in front of St Eunan’s Cathedral.
The Celtic Cross by local sculptor Raymond Herrity was erected almost 20 years ago to commemorate the birth of Jesus.
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh said that the cross is a “lovely piece of work” that sits in a high-traffic area near the Cathedral, Conwal Parish Church and local schools.
He asked the council to show it off more with the addition of lights.
“If it could be lit up with spotlights, it could be an opportunity to apply filters to recognise various events, like autism awareness, Darkness Into Light and national days, the same as we do with the Polestar Roundabout,” Cllr Kavanagh told yesterday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle added that lighting would enhance the feature and would be a bonus during the regeneration of the Cathedral Quarter area.
The local authority responded to say that an assessment can be carried out to establish if lights are feasible and the costs and implications. If established as suitable, appropriate funding opportunities can be sought.
