Donegal Daily can reveal that UK retail giant JD Sports is to open a new store in Letterkenny.
The company will take over the former Argos outlet in the Letterkenny Retail Park which closed in June of last year.
They are to submit plans to Donegal County Council for alterations to the shop to include new internal and external signage as well as a second entrance.
The move is seen by some in the retail sector as a major vote of confidence in the town. Others, however, feel the council and local stakeholders must push on maintaining the main street as Letterkenny’s traditional commercial hub.
JD Sports currently has 22 outlets in the Republic of Ireland and also has a store just across the border in Derry.
Pre-tax profits at its main Irish unit increased by 4pc to €19.56m last year.
Accounts for John David Sports Fashion (Ireland) Ltd show that the business recorded the increase in pre-tax profits as revenues rose by 14.5pc from €189.03m to €216.44m in the 12 months to the end of January, 2023.
