An Agriculture student at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Donegal says attending an Open Day was the deal-breaker in deciding their third-level journey.
Somhairle Mathers from Ballycastle in County Antrim knew he wanted to study agriculture but was unsure of the right university.
After visiting various universities in the north and south, ATU Letterkenny immediately resonated with him.
“Once I arrived, I felt welcomed,” Somhairle said. “I immediately knew that this was where I wanted to go.”
Within his first week, he joined the ATU Hurling team, earning a sports scholarship with financial benefits, free physiotherapy, equipment, and gym access.
He also actively participated in the Ag Society (Agricultural Science) and An Cumann Gaelach to share his fluency in Gaeilge. Getting involved in student life is one of the best ways to form friendships.
“I had made lots of new friends on and off my course, from social events in the town along with course and my sporting activities in which I was involved in,” he said.
When it comes to learning, Somhairle says the BSc (Hons) in Agriculture at ATU offers regular hands-on practicals on local farms and in college labs to enhance his understanding of the industry.
“I am more than happy with the help and guidance from the lecturers,” he states.
Echoing his own experience, Somhairle highly recommends that students do their research by
checking out colleges and universities online and attending Open Days.
“If anyone wants a chat or advice on my course or any other course for that matter, I myself and the college staff would have no problem in answering them,” he said.
