Donegal’s famous Silkie whiskey from the Sliabh Liag Distillery has been named the best Irish whiskey of 2024 by The Independent.
The UK paper gave Silkie top marks overall, with the Donegal whiskey coming out on top in the Independent’s blind taste tests.
All of the Irish whiskies tested underwent evaluation through two distinct scenarios: they were firstly assessed on their performance when drunk neat, (no ice or water), in its purest form. Then a few drops of water were added, and finally a large ice cube. This process provided insights into the evolution of each whiskey, enabling the assessment of aroma, concentration, and depth of flavour.
The second test was carried out with a straightforward mixer, and then in the iconic whiskey cocktail, An Old Fashioned. All the whiskies were blind tasted so no outside factors could influence the results.
Silkie came out on top against all of its major Irish whiskey competitors, a true seal of approval for the Sliabh Liag Distillery.
Reviewing the whiskey in The Independent, Aidy Smith said The Legendary Silkie Irish Whiskey has: “an incredibly approachable flavour profile”, which “makes it the perfect choice for all palates (novice and expert alike), with a distinct character, texture and mouth-watering taste that would make any Irishman or Irishwoman proud to put their name alongside it.”
“We are delighted to receive this recognition as the top Irish Whiskey for 2024,” said James Doherty, founder of Sliabh Liag Distillers.
“This achievement is testament to the quality of the whiskeys we source and the blending process that allows us to explore taste and use profound memories to bring character and flavour to Irish whiskey. We take great pride in our heritage and are honoured to be recognised among the best in the industry. Each accolade Silkie receives is further proof of our commitment to upholding the highest standards of craftsmanship, quality, and innovation in the whiskey industry.”
