Donegal is to get a new Garda Chief Superintendent “within days.”
The announcement is expected to be made by Garda Headquarters imminently.
The county has been without a local Chief Superintendent since the departure of former Chief Superintendent Terry McGinn in December 2022.
She was replaced by Chief Superintendent Aidan Glackin who was based in Co Sligo and who overseen three different counties.
There had been plans to amalgamate the Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim divisions with Chief Superintendent Glackin overseeing all three.
However, after much lobbying, a decision was made to leave Donegal as a ‘stand alone’ Garda division.
A well-placed source told Donegal Daily that the county’s new Chief Superintendent will be officially announced “in the coming days.”
The favourite for the position is a vastly experienced officer who is already serving in the local district but who has experience outside of the county.
The source added “The announcement will be seen as a strong signal for the force in the county. Donegal has been without a locally-led Chief Superintendent for a long time now.
“This is a strong message from headquarters and the person being appointed will be a popular choice among their peers.”
