The opening hours of the famous Grianán of Aileach site are to be extended this year, following months of campaigning and petitioning by the local community.
Concern arose last year after the installation of a gate that restricted access to the interior section of the historic site during mornings and evenings. This, coupled with unplanned closures during poor weather in winter, sparked disappointment among locals and tourists alike, many of whom cherish the site for its sunrises, sunsets, and solstice/equinox experiences.
The issue has brought disappointment to tourists and regular visitors seeking to enjoy and photograph sunrises and sunsets from the hilltop, particularly at times of solstice and equinox.
A community petition was launched this month calling on the government to reverse the restrictions implemented last autumn. Almost 1,500 people have added their signatures.
Now, the OPW has agreed to extend the opening hours of Grianan of Aileach. While the specific details of the extended hours are yet to be confirmed, the news has brought a sense of hope to those who value the Grianán of Aileach – a site of huge historical importance that welcomes 16,500 visitors per year.
Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said: “There has been a lot of frustration in the local community and with visitors at the reduction of opening hours at An Grianán of Aileach recently.
“The Office of Public Works (OPW) are responsible for the maintenance of the site, while Donegal County Council are responsible for the road up to the site and the adjoining car park.
“I understand that both will be working together along with Fáilte Ireland (tourism body) and the local community to develop the full potential of A Grianán in the time ahead.
“I had made repeated representations to the Minister for the OPW in recent months and I have been advised in recent days by the OPW that they will be extending the opening hours.
“The extension of the opening hours is a welcome sign that the OPW are listening to our local community. They must now continue to listen and to work in partnership with the people of Donegal and the North West to make the most of our precious amenity.”
