Donegal county councillor Jack Murray will contest the next local election.
There was shock in Sinn Fein locally yesterday when Councillor Liam Doherty announced he will not be running again.
The Convoy man would have been almost certain to be re-elected for his party.
But after a meeting of the Buncrana Sinn Féin Cumann in the Lake of Shadows Hotel last night, Councillor Murray said he will be going forward for election.
Speaking after the meeting he said “This is not something I take lightly. Representing the people of Inishowen has been the honour of a lifetime to me. It has been chaotic, hectic, and sometimes stressful – but I’ve loved it.
“I love this community and I believe in it. There is absolutely nowhere else that I’d rather raise my daughter and to live with my family. It is the most beautiful place on earth with some of the finest people in it.
“But it has been overlooked, ignored and forgotten by successive governments for a century. I want to continue to fight for our place to reach its potential.
“Along with others, I want to fight for a real and accessible 100% redress scheme for defective block homeowners, to deliver our new leisure centre, new school builds, increased housing supply and to stand up for ordinary workers.”
The Buncrana man this campaign he’ll be running as part of the largest Sinn Féin team ever put forward in Donegal.
“Our electoral strategy is ambitious, as that is what’s needed if we want to achieve change. This, of course, comes with risks so we’ll need every vote possible if we are to succeed.
“Though regularly knocking on doors anyway, I’m excited to be calling now while also asking for your vote.”
