A Donegal pensioner who admitted sabotaging the gas supply of a local community centre has claimed it was ‘innocent enough’.
Charlie Lynagh (73) pleaded guilty at last month’s sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court to the charge.
He was charged with ‘endangerment’ in October 2022 at Mevagh Hall in Carrigart when he damaged two high pressure LPG rubber gas pipes..
A previous court sitting was told Lynagh pierced a hole in each pipe and then turned on the gas creating a substantial risk of death or serious harm to another.
Speaking to the Sunday World this week, he said he wasn’t trying to blow the centre up and the sabotage was ‘revenge’ for attacks by youths on his mobile home.
He described his actions as “innocent enough” and said “no damage was done”.
Speaking outside his mobile home in Tirloughan, Carrigart, last Thursday, Lynagh said he welcomed the chance to give his side of the story.
“It was innocent enough,” he told the paper. “There was no damage done.
“It was only three old lousy pipes that were full of holes … knife marks or something.”
Asked why he had damaged the pipes, the pensioner said he had believed that youths hanging around at the community centre were responsible for causing damage to his mobile home.
Judge John Aylmer adjourned Lynagh’s case until the June sitting of the circuit court for sentencing.
