A fish and chips takeaway in Dunfanaghy has announced it will not open this summer due to mounting challenges.
The Corcreggan Gourmet Fish & Chips street food shack at the Corcreggan Mill was a popular choice for locals and holidaymakers alike.
However, after five years in business, they have said the current climate is unsustainable.
The team wrote on social media: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of ‘Corcreggan Fish & Chips’ after five seasons. The decision not to return for the upcoming Summer season has been driven by a combination of factors, in particular rising food and energy costs and chef shortages across the sector.
“Every year, we have looked forward to putting a team together and getting ‘the Van’ back up and running for the holiday season. This has become increasingly difficult year-on-year and the sustained lack of any government recognition of the severity of the challenges facing food-led businesses post-Covid, particularly those which are rural and seasonal, has been disheartening. This has left us with little hope that things will improve any time soon.”
The quality food and casual outdoor dining were a hit with families and foodies.
Some of the highlights of the business was being ranked on the Independent.ie list of 26 best Fish & Chips spots in Ireland.
“We are so, so grateful to EVERYONE who contributed to making Corcreggan Fish & Chips the great place it became, particularly the leadership and creativity of our exceptional chefs, Finnian O’Connor and Conal McFeely, who crafted delicious dishes season after season, and who were supported by our dedicated team of staff and workaways, who always went the extra mile,” the team continued.
“A heartfelt thank you also goes out to our loyal customers and fantastic suppliers who supported us over the past five seasons. We couldn’t be more grateful.”
Corcreggan Mill will continue to provide year-round group and self-catering accommodation, along with a range of private dining and specialist event options. The motorhome park and glamping accommodation will open this Easter, and the B&B reopens in late May ‘24.
