The music community of Donegal and beyond is mourning the loss of legendary Letterkenny musician Hugh McLean, who passed away on Monday.
Hugh, a true gentleman and a highly respected figure in the local music scene, began his career in 1963 with the Willie Ponsonby showband.
From there, he went on to establish a successful career that saw him perform across Ireland, the UK, and the US. He fronted many bands throughout his career, including the Mighty Avons and Knoxville.
Last year, Hugh celebrated 60 years in music with a special night at the Station House Hotel organised by the Letterkenny Community Heritage Group. The event was a resounding success, filled with tributes to Hugh’s talent and his enduring contribution to the local music scene.
Tributes have been pouring in from fellow musicians and industry professionals.
The Donegal Bay Radio station paused broadcasting yesterday as a mark of respect to their friend and colleague. They said: “A great DJ and musician with over 60 years in the entertainment industry. He will be sadly missed by all his family, friends, his listeners and fans and by all of us.”
