Donegal County Council Councillors have approved the construction of a social housing development at the former fire station site in Stranorlar.

The vacant fire station on main street is set to be demolished to build a two‐storey development, consisting of four two-bed apartments and four one-bed apartments.

The project will include a private residential courtyard, on‐street parking, realignment of footpaths, removal and replacement of existing trees and all associated site works.

The scheme underwent a public consultation process last year and was granted planning permission on 16th January 2024, subject to 21 conditions.

A report from the Chief Executive, presented to councillors in Lifford today, said the development is well-aligned with the Ballybofey – Stranorlar Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan: “The development of the site
provides an excellent opportunity for a residential development and an ideal location for social housing and the creation of a sustainable community, given its proximity to the town centre and the numerous retail and educational, recreational facilities located close‐by.

“The scheme will enhance the character and quality of the surrounding area and provide a high quality and sustainable housing scheme under the Government’s Housing for All Plan. All existing services such as storm, foul, ESB, Broadband and water supply are readily available to the site.”
