The head of the Garda Traffic Corps in Donegal has pleaded with motorists not to travel during this evening’s Red Weather Alert – unless their journey is essential.
Inspector Seamus McGonigle (pictured above) said that in light of the Status Red warning, Gardai are asking people to exercise extreme caution.
He said “The Red Weather warning comes with the warning of possible falling trees, power disruptions and large waves.
“We would be asking people not to travel unless their journey is essential.
“Overall we are simply asking people to exercise caution and use their common sense during this period.”
The initial weather alert is due to last from between 5pm to 9pm but may now last longer.
Donegal County Council is due to meet shortly to discuss their response to the weather warning.
They are also due to issue a press release advising the local public which will be carried in full on Donegal Daily as soon as we get it.
