A Letterkenny councillor has raised safety concerns over the visibility of the central reservation of the Four Lane road.
The busy N56 road is now fully open after a multi-million euro upgrade.
However, Cllr Donal Coyle has highlighted that the concrete divider in the middle of the road is a risk to motorists at night.
He called for reflectors to be added to the reservation, saying: “The four lanes are much narrower and that central reservation is a huge load of concrete. What is the need for that? Would an ordinary barrier not serve the same purpose and leave lanes a wee bit wider?
“On wet, dark nights, you can’t actually see it. Reflectors like what you have on barriers would be a big help.”
Cllr Coyle said he has been contacted by concerned drivers about the infrastructure, as well as the Cullion Road turning point.
Cllr Coyle said drivers have been sitting “for up to 12 minutes” waiting on lights to change due to an issue with the trigger being too far forward.
The matters were raised during a motion at the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District’s January meeting on Tuesday.
In response, David McIlwaine, Area Manager, Roads & Transportation said that changes to the four-lane will be subject to ongoing review and monitoring to ensure its safe and effective operation. Issues can be brought before cost-construction audits, he said.
