The young girl who was saved in the 2016 Buncrana Pier tragedy has made another special visit to the Lough Swilly RNLI crew this week to present them with a cheque for €4,100.
Rioghnach McGrotty was just four months old when she was saved from the freezing waters of Lough Swilly after her family’s car slid off a slipway at Buncrana pier in March 2016.
Rioghnach’s father Sean McGrotty (48), brothers Evan (8) and Mark (12), her grandmother Ruth Daniels (57) and aunt Jodie Lee Daniels (14) drowned in the horrific accident.
Rioghnach was the sole survivor after being rescued by passer-by Davitt Walsh.
Since then, Rioghnach has become good friends of the Lough Swilly RNLI station and has visited on many occasions.
Now aged 8, Rioghnach paid another visit to the Lough Swilly RNLI station on Tuesday. She had not one, but two significant cheques to present.
The Evan McGrotty Fund, which had been set up in memory of her brother, has gathered fund for two donations of €4,100 each to Danny Quigley’s charity the Celebration of Life and the second to Lough Swilly RNLI.
“It was fantastic to see Rioghnach back at Ned’s Point Station with her lifeboat family,” the crew said.
