Public urged not to ignore a sheep stuck on its back

The Cathoirleach of the Glenties MD has called on hill walkers and countryside visitors to Donegal to be vigilant for sheep found cast.

If a sheep is lying on its back with its legs up, it should not be ignored as they can die in such a position through suffocation.

Many sheep at this time of year are heavily pregnant and have a heavy winter wool coat and cannot save themselves.

The first step is to try and locate the farmer.

If the farmer is not around, a person should approach the sheep very calmly and gently roll the sheep right side up.

Cllr Michael McClafferty said: “Not all people understand when a sheep is on their back every second counts, before birds attack and destroy the helpless sheep. I am appealing to all hill walkers and visitors to be alert and get educated.”
