Former MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher has decided not to run for the European Parliament – on this occasion.
The veteran politician was tipped to run for Fianna Fail in Europe.
But Mr Gallagher has announced he will concentrate on helping his party prepare for the local elections later this year.
He said “On this occasion I will not be allowing my name to go forward to the Euro’s convention.
“After much consideration I have decided to remain active within the constituency and focus my efforts in preparing the party for the imminent Local Government Elections in June and the real possibility of a 2024 General Election in the autumn.
“Much needs to be done to best prepare our party for these electoral challenges and we all will play our part in the time ahead to maximise the party’s best chances of winning the optimum number of seats in these different electoral contests.
He added that he was greatly honoured and humbled to be nominated to contest the convention for the forthcoming European Parliament Elections and having served in the Parliament; he knww only too well the importance of the European Union in our lives on a daily basis.
Mr Galagher said the European Elections are the most pressing challenge and urged people to support the remaining Donegal Candidate Senator Niall Blaney, to guarantee Donegal has a candidate in the forthcoming elections.
He added “It is essential that we show unity and resolve in the run up to convention in order to secure a Donegal nomination. I wish Niall the best of luck and my complete support in the weeks ahead.”
He concluded by again thanking those who nominated him saying their confidence and support in him is greatly appreciated.
And he added “I remain available as always to assist where possible, please feel free to contact me at anytime by phone or email. I remain committed to working on behalf of you all.”
Mr Gallagher paid a special tribute to former county councillor and personal friend, Noreen Mc Garvey following her recent passing.
He said “I wish also to pay tribute to the late Noreen Mc Garvey who worked diligently with me for almost twenty years, many of you would have had contact with her.
“I convey the sympathies of you all to her daughter Amy and her family at this sad time of her passing. May she rest in peace.
”
Thank you for your time, and support and lets all continue our tasks of preparing Fianna Fáil for the challenges that 2024 may bring us as a party.”
