Three new pedestrian/cycle crossing facilities are now in action on the Four Lane road in Letterkenny.
The traffic lights were turned on yesterday.
Donegal County Council is urging motorists to take extra care and attention at the lights.
The speed limit on this route remains at 60kph.
A council spokesperson said: “Significant improvements to the N56 Four Lane Road were completed last year. The improvements to this road, which is highly important and the most heavily trafficked in the county, includes full dualling and consistent road layout, safer lane separation and new and improved junctions, bus stops and cycle/pedestrian facilities.
“The traffic control systems specialists will set up the lights and together with DCC will monitor their operation over this initial period.
“It is important that all road users are fully aware of these new crossings and that motorists take extra care and attention, noting the posted speed limit of 60kph and have due regard to their fellow road users who may be walking or cycling.
“Donegal County Council ask the public for their co-operation, patience and additional observation and care on this section of road during the introduction of these crossing facilities.”
