There is shock and sadness across West Donegal and beyond following the death last night of Donegal County Councillor Noreen McGarvey.

Councillor McGarvey had been ill for some time.

She passed away surrounded by her family at the Donegal Hospice.

She was first elected to Donegal County Council in the local elections of May, 2019 for the Fianna Fail party.

But having worked with Pat the Cope Gallagher in various roles when he was a Minister, a TD and an MEP, Ms McGarvey was already a political veteran in many ways.

She served as Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District from May 2020 to May 2021 and was a very popular Cathaoirleach who treated everyone with kindness and respect.

Current Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District, Councillor Michael McClafferty paid tribute to Councillor McGarvey this morning.

He said “Our immediate thoughts and prayers are with Noreen’s daughter Amy, her mum and dad her siblings and Pat the Cope Gallagher respectively whom Noreen was secretary to. Also to all Noreen’s friends and Fianna Fail Colleagues on Donegal County Council locally and nationally the wider Fianna Fail party circle.

“Our condolences to you all at this difficult time. Noreen was a very gentle, kind hearted, considerate, warm and caring lady who always a smile for everyone. She had great attention to detail and was razor sharp on her points, was always clear and stuck to what she believed in while fighting the corner of her constituents always. R.I.P Noreen.”

Outside of politics she was actively involved in the local community and held many roles down through the years.

She was a member of the committee of the Burtonport Festival for many years and was also a keen golfer at Cruit Island Golf Club and also sang in St Columba’s Church Choir.

Donegal government minister, Charlie McConalogue, also paid tribute to Councillor McGarvey.
He said “Noreen was elected as a councillor for the Glenties Electoral Area in May 2019.  She also worked in Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher’s constituency office for many years, and was a central part of the fabric of the Fianna Fáil party in Donegal,” the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine commented.
“Noreen was an extremely kind and caring person and was so unassuming in much of the work she did for her local community and beyond. She had a huge passion for Irish culture and was heavily involved in Scór in promoting cultural activities within the GAA.
“Noreen bore her illness with fortitude and continued to represent the people of West Donegal, despite her health challenges,” he said.
“Noreen’s passing is a huge loss to local politics and the Fianna Fáil party. Her loss will be felt most by her family and those closest to her. I extend my sympathy Noreen’s daughter, Amy, parents Séamus and Susie, brother, Declan, and sisters Collette and Debbie, and her wide circle of relatives and friends,” Minister McConalogue added.

Her funeral details will follow shortly.
