Warning over defective tyres after fines issued at Donegal checkpoints

Gardaí in Donegal are calling on motorists to check their tyres after a number of detections at roadside checkpoints.

Gardaí from Buncrana Roads Policing Unit were assisted by Revenue and Social Welfare Enforcement Officers at checkpoints across Malin Town, Carndonagh and St. Johnston yesterday.

Garda reported that the majority of drivers who were stopped were found to have all in order, but a small number of fines were issued for tyre offences.

A spokesperson said: “Please check your tyres regularly and even more regularly when the tread depth reaches 3mm. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm. The more worn your tyres become, the less grip they will have on the road surface.

“We urge all drivers to conduct the necessary safety checks on their car before getting behind the wheel. Please do not take to the road if your car is not in a roadworthy condition!”
