Christmas shoppers warned to keep valuable gifts out of sight

With shopping season in full swing, gardaí in Donegal are reminding people to protect their valuables from opportunistic thieves.

Shoppers can plan their trips wisely to avoid the risk of theft.

If you are buying an expensive item such as a games console this Christmas, make this the last stop before you go home.

Garda Sergeant Charlene Anderson, in a community appeal today, urged people to try and put valuables in the boot of your car if you can.

“Keep them out of sight and out of mind,” said Sgt Anderson.

Sgt Anderson said people can be so opportunistic that they decide to break a car window to steal an item as soon as they see it.

“Leave expensive gifts to the end of your shopping,” Sgt Anderson advised.

“Park somewhere where there is lights, as secure as possible with CCTV, ensure windows and doors are locked.

“All those little things are so important and report any thefts or suspicious activities in car parks to the guards.”
