Met Éireann has issued a ‘moderate advisory’ cold weather warning for Donegal for the next five days.
The warning is valid from 1pm today until 11pm on Tuesday and could result in falls of snow.
The national meteorological service also said an Arctic airflow is set to continue over the weekend and into the early days of next week.
There will be ‘persistently very cold night time and daytime temperatures’, bringing sharp to severe frosts and icy stretches on roads and footpaths. Dense fog will also form in places with patches of freezing fog. Some showers of hail and sleet are expected too, falling as snow on higher ground. Further updates to warnings are expected in the coming days.
There is a risk of hazardous driving conditions throughout the weekend as temperatures plummet over the next two nights.
A status yellow weather warning is in place from 5pm today, Friday until 12noon on Sunday.
Frost and ice are likely in many areas, while some showers will fall as hail or sleet in northern counties.
A second weather alert for fog has been issued until Sunday.
Forecasters warn of dense fog forming in many areas, lingering through the day in some places. “Patches of freezing fog too,” the alert said.
We can expect lows of -4C in Donegal overnight, followed by a cold Saturday with highest temperatures of just 2 to 6 degrees.
The outlook is “very cold with frost, ice and some wintry precipitation. Less cold by next week.”
