Survey work is due to begin next week on the construction of a greenway path linking Carrigart and Downings.
€500,000 in Rural Recreation funding had been made available by Minister Heather Humphreys earlier this year following her visit to Carrigart, under the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy for the development of the Carrigart to Downings Pathway.
Joe McHugh, TD for Donegal, “Special thanks to Údarás na Gaeltachta, particularly the support from former CEO Micheál Heanaigh, for co-funding the EIS with Donegal County Council at the beginning of this application, and I wish to acknowledge the Council engineers for all their work to date on this project.
“I would like to acknowledge Columba Boyce and the work of Carrigart Tidy Towns, and also the work of Downings Tidy Towns for their dedication to the upkeep of both villages and for campaigning for this project over recent years.
“The Parish of Mevagh continues to grow its services around tourism, including the exciting ongoing construction and development at the Carrigart Hotel, and this pathway will be a big asset in the area. With more walkers and runners on the road, and more tourists visiting the region, this will be a great safe place to walk in our community, “ concluded McHugh.
