Pogues legend Shane MacGowan has been discharged from hospital in time for Christmas and his birthday.
The Fairytale Of New York singer has been in St Vincent’s Hospital for months battling a brain infection he contracted last year.
Shane will celebrate his 66th birthday on Christmas Day.
Shane’s wife Victoria Mary Clarke posted a picture of Mr MacGowan in a hospital bed yesterday and wrote: “Shane got out of the hospital!
“We are deeply and eternally grateful to all of the doctors and nurses and staff at St Vincent’s it’s the best!
“And special thanks to Tom Creagh and Brian Corscadden for your help.”
MacGowan has welcomed a series of showbiz visitors since he was hospitalised in June. Daniel O’Donnell visited his friend in August and this week Shane was “so happy” to see Imelda May at his bedside.
With support growing for Shane’s health, The Pogues are now being tipped to land their first ever Christmas number one single for their iconic festive hit, Fairytale of New York.
The famous song missed out on the number one spot in 1987 when it was overtaken by The Pet Shop Boys’ cover of Always On My Mind.
BetVictor is now reporting odds of 11/8 for Fairytale of New York to claim this year’s Christmas Number One.
