The government is working on a proposed ban on young people using e-scooters.
Safety concerns have sparked the move by the Department of Transport, following representations from Justice Minister Helen McEntee, gardaí and the Road Safety Authority.
Over 50 e-scooter users have been injured and three users have died on Irish roads since January 2022. An e-bike cyclist died in a fatal collision involving a truck in Dublin 8 yesterday.
Regulations for the use of e-scooters are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks.
Currently, e-scooters are illegal to ride on roads and footpaths. A new law aimed at modernising Ireland’s regulatory system for road traffic will formally classify e-scooters as Personal Powered Transporters (PPTs).
