While some of us are tidying away the Halloween decorations, a Kerrykeel couple is busy preparing to spread Christmas joy again with their spectacular charity lights display.
Michael and Mary Whoriskey have been decorating their home in Gortcally with stunning lights every year since 2006.
This year, they will be lighting up on Saturday, 2nd December, once again for local causes.
The couple has chosen two charities as beneficiaries of their fundraising – St. Bernadette’s Special School in Letterkenny and the Donegal branch of Critical – Emergency Medical Response.
Last year the Whoriskeys raised over €10,000 for the Donegal Down Syndrome Association, bringing the grand total raised over the €100,000 mark. Despite challenges, such as 10 days of hard frost last year, Mary and Michael remain determined to create something special for families to enjoy.

Nowadays the magic touch comes from six-year-old Ollie, Mary and Michael’s grandson, who is the Chief Lights Supervisor.
Ollie has the important role of inspecting the hundreds of light-up Santas, unravelling strings of fairy lights and being his Granda’s best helper.

The Whoriskey’s lights display has become a beloved tradition for many, as the home is transformed into a magical wonderland for families to create special memories, and even for romance as engagements have taken place in the sparkling setting.
To spread the joy further, the couple has invited local businesses to sponsor the display and help cover the running costs, from diesel for generators and electricity bills to repairs and replacements. Get in touch via the Whoriskey’s Christmas Lights Display Kerrykeel Facebook page.
The fundraising for this year’s display continues on Thursday, 16th November, with an annual concert at the Fannet Presbyterian Church in the church hall at 8.15pm. All welcome.
Following the concerts, the countdown will be on in earnest for the evening of Saturday 2nd December. For the latest details on the switch-on check out the Facebook page here.
A donation box will be placed at the Whoriskeys’ home and donations are also welcome online.
People who enjoy the lights are kindly asked to donate in person or at https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/WhoriskeysChristmasLights2023. (Funds will be divided between both charities)
