Third man pleads guilty to Letterkenny assault

November 2, 2023

A third man has pleaded guilty to the serious assault of another man in Letterkenny.

John Tierney pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Patrick O’Shea at Celtic Apartments, Pearse Road, Letterkenny, on June 23, 2020.

Tierney was brought to Letterkenny Circuit Court from Castlerea Prison, where he is currently serving a sentence on another matter.

The 34-year-old appeared for the purpose of being formally arraigned in the matter. Tierney, wearing a grey tracksuit, spoke only to plead guilty to the charge of assault causing harm.

Counsel for Tierney, Ms Dara Foynes SC, said that this offence was committed while Tierney was on bail ’so there will be implications’. Ms Foynes sought an updated probation report and a governor’s report for Tierney.

“He is, I believe, doing well in prison,” Ms Foynes said.

Judge John Aylmer remanded Tierney in custody and adjourned the case until the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court in January.

Last week, two co-accused, Brian Cairney, a 49-year-old with an address at Oliver Plunkett Road, Letterkenny, and Danny Tierney, a 40-year-old from Celtic Apartments, Pearse Road, Letterkenny, also pleaded guilty.
