Man in court after ‘making swings’ at gardaí

October 25, 2023

A Letterkenny man has avoided conviction after squaring up to Gardai on patrol.

Joseph Dorrian, aged 23, of Rahan, Letterkenny, was before Letterkenny District Court following an incident on July 16, 2023.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that Gardai were on patrol when a man came towards the patrol car with his arms outstretched, shouting abuse.

When Garda Mulvaney exited the patrol car, Dorrian squared up to him and continued to shout abuse.

“He made a few swings at Gardai, but didn’t connect,” Sergeant Collins said.

Dorrian was said to be ‘compliant and contrite’ when arrested.

Mr Gordon Curley, solicitor for Dorrian, said his client is a 23-year-old construction worker who plans to go to Australia in 2024. Mr Curley said Dorrian returned to the Garda station to apologise for his behaviour.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham said the abuse of Gardai in the course of their duties ‘cannot be condoned at all on any level’.

Judge Cunningham said if Dorrian made a €300 contribution to Little Blue Heroes he would avoid a conviction.
