A man who was caught driving at 179km/h has avoided a driving disqualification.

Letterkenny District Court heard details of a case involving Adrian McTaggart.

The 28-year-old, with an address at Kilconell Glebe, Kilmacrennan, was charged with the offence at Coolboy, Letterkenny.

Sergeant Gerard Dalton told the court that Gardai were operating a speed check at 12.02am when they clocked McTaggart driving at 179km/h. The road in question is governed by a 100km/h speed limit.

Gardai subsequently stopped the vehicle and spoke to McTaggart.

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said his client has no previous convictions and told the court that McTaggart was on the way home on a ‘clear night’.

“He has met this matter head on and wishes to put it well and truly behind him,” Mr Gallagher said.

McTaggart was initially charged with dangerous driving.

Judge Ciaran Liddy accepted a plea to a charge of careless driving. McTaggart was fined €150 and given three months to pay.
