Donegal County Council is to meet monthly to discuss the housing shortage here.
The move was confirmed following a proposal by Councillor Patrick McGowan at a special meeting yesterday.
Cllr McGowan said he welcomes agreement from the full council on his calls for additional monthly meetings on housing.
These, he said, would address the housing shortage in the county and to allow councillors and staff “to engage more regularly in order to understand what the challenges are in delivering housing for all.”
Cllr Ciaran Brogan seconded Cllr McGowan’s proposal and the first meeting has been scheduled for the 22nd of November.
The CEO of the council, John McLaughlin, told yesterday’s meeting there is a new team in place eager to work with councillors to ensure that the council is delivering as many social houses as possible. At the same time, he added, the team was ensuring houses with defective blocks, as well as a raft of other government housing improvements schemes, is supported across the county.
Mr McLaughlin also committed to working with councillors and developers to ensure that issues raised by members over the last two meetings will be addressed.
“Members and council management agreed the next few months are crucial in ensuring that every step possible is taken to ensure the council will be delivering sufficient housing across the county, including SI houses, over the long and short term,” Cllr McGowan said.
