In an era where dedication often stands as a fleeting commitment, there are exceptional individuals who defy the odds. Among them is Helena Whyte, a Special Needs Assistant whose unwavering passion and tireless work have left an indelible mark on Little Angels School in Letterkenny, County Donegal. This month, the school celebrates her remarkable 40-year journey.
Helena embarked on her journey as an SNA in 1983, when Little Angels School was merely a small house in Ballyraine, Letterkenny. The school was in its infancy, but Helena’s dedication was unwavering from the start. She joined a team of educators and caregivers who were committed to providing exceptional support to children with special needs.
Helena’s colleagues say her passion for her work is palpable to anyone who has had the privilege of knowing her. Her daily interactions with students reveal a deep understanding of their unique needs and challenges. She has tirelessly worked to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where each child can thrive.
As Lourde Walsh, a fellow SNA at Little Angels School, puts it, “Helena’s dedication is truly unmatched. She goes above and beyond to ensure that every child feels valued and supported. She’s not just a colleague; she’s an inspiration.”
Over the decades, Helena has not only earned the respect of her colleagues but has also become a beloved figure among the students and their families. Her ability to connect with the children on a personal level has transformed her into a trusted friend and mentor.
As Principal Ailbhe Dunne highlights, “It’s an incredible accomplishment and shows true dedication to the very special children that we educate and care for on a daily basis. It is no exaggeration to say that Helena has touched countless lives for the better over those 40 years. We congratulate Helena on this magnificent milestone, and we truly thank this special lady for all her kindness to all the children and their families that she has helped and inspired over all these years.”
Helena has also been a loyal and true friend to the many teachers, SNAs and principals she has worked with in Little Angels.
Staff recently held a celebration in Helena’s honour and were joined by former colleagues, friends and family members.
As Helena eloquently said, “We are like a family at Little Angels and we are a very special group of people who get the privilege to work with such very special children.”
